Cafe owner serving a customer at the counter

If you have asked three agencies what SEO for your cafe or restaurant costs, you have probably had three very different answers. Some of that is genuine: a single cafe in a quiet suburb needs less than a restaurant group in the Melbourne or Sydney CBD. Some of it is that "SEO" means very different amounts of work depending on who is selling it.

This guide sets out what Australian restaurants typically pay in 2026, what you should get at each level, and how to tell whether it will pay for itself.

Typical prices in 2026

These are typical ranges we see quoted to independent cafes and restaurants. They are a guide, not a rate card; your area and the state of your current listing move the number.

Who does itTypical costWhat you usually get
Freelancer or small local operatorA$300 to A$1,000 a monthProfile upkeep, some reviews and posts. Quality varies a lot.
Specialist or offshore agencyA$800 to A$2,000 a monthProfile, reviews, website fixes, citations and a monthly report.
Full-service Australian agencyA$1,500 to A$4,000+ a monthAll of the above plus content, ads and a dedicated account manager.
One-off audit and setupA$500 to A$2,500A fix-it-once job: profile clean-up, website basics, tracking.

Google Ads are separate. Management fees are on top of the money you pay Google for clicks.

What should be included

For a cafe or restaurant, "SEO" should mostly mean local SEO: getting into the Google Maps results for the searches near you. At a minimum, a monthly plan should cover:

  • Google Business Profile management: categories, hours (including public holidays), menu, attributes, regular photos and posts.
  • Reviews: a system for asking, and replies to every review. See how many reviews a restaurant needs.
  • Website fixes: a proper homepage title, the menu as text rather than a PDF, fast loading on phones, and your details matching your Google listing.
  • Listings elsewhere: your name, address and phone consistent on the directories Australians use, such as Tripadvisor, Yelp, TrueLocal and the delivery apps.
  • A monthly report with numbers that matter to a restaurant: where you rank for your main searches, calls, direction requests, website clicks and bookings.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed first place. Nobody controls Google's rankings. A guarantee usually means the agency will pick an obscure search you already rank for.
  • Long lock-in contracts with no way out if nothing happens. Three months is a fair minimum. Twelve with no exit is not.
  • No list of deliverables. If they can't tell you what they will do each month, they may not do much.
  • Reports full of impressions and nothing else. You want calls, directions, bookings and rankings for searches that bring in customers.
  • Buying reviews or offering rewards for them. It breaks Google's rules and the ACCC takes fake reviews seriously.

Will it pay for itself? A quick sum

Here is a simple way to check, using made-up but realistic numbers. Swap in your own.

  • Average spend per visit: A$30.
  • A regular comes about twice a month, so roughly A$700 a year.
  • At A$1,000 a month, the plan costs A$12,000 a year.
  • To break even, it needs to bring in about 17 new regulars over the year, or one or two a month.

Most cafes that are missing from the Maps top three for their suburb lose far more than that to the places that are in it. That is the case for doing it. If your numbers don't add up, start with the free work in our Google Maps top 3 checklist instead.

What we charge

We publish our prices. Local SEO and Google Business Profile management for cafes and restaurants starts from A$900 a month. Local SEO plus Google Ads management starts from A$1,600 a month (ad spend separate), and a cafe or restaurant website starts from A$2,800. We are based in Delhi with a founder who spent 16 years in hospitality, including in Australia, so our costs are lower than most Australian agencies and we work to your hours.

FAQs

How much should a restaurant spend on SEO in Australia?

Most independent cafes and restaurants spend somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars a month on local SEO, depending on who does it and how competitive the area is. A single-site cafe in a suburb rarely needs the top end. A multi-site restaurant group in a capital city CBD often does.

Is SEO worth it for a small cafe?

Usually, if people search for what you serve in your area. Work out what one extra table or one extra regular is worth to you over a year, then how many of those the work needs to bring in to cover its cost. For most cafes the bar is lower than they expect.

Can I do restaurant SEO myself?

Yes, a lot of it. Keeping your Google Business Profile complete, asking for reviews, replying to them and posting photos are all things an owner or manager can do. Where an agency helps is doing it every week without fail, fixing the website side, and tracking what is working.

How long before restaurant SEO shows results?

Google Business Profile and review work usually shows in Maps rankings within 4 to 8 weeks. Website and content work takes 3 to 6 months. Be wary of anyone who promises first place in a fortnight.

Why are some SEO agencies so much cheaper?

Sometimes it is lower costs, for example a team based outside Australia. Sometimes it is because very little is actually being done. Ask for a list of monthly deliverables and a sample report before you sign anything.
