Follower count is a vanity number. Engagement rate is the one that tells you whether people actually care about what you post, and it is the metric brands look at before paying for a collaboration. Here is exactly how to calculate it, what a good number looks like, and a free tool to skip the math.
The core formula
The most widely used version is:
Engagement rate = (total engagements ÷ followers) × 100
Where "engagements" is likes + comments + saves + shares. Example: a post with 300 likes, 40 comments, 50 saves and 10 shares is 400 engagements. On a 10,000-follower account, that is (400 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 4%, a strong result.
By followers vs by reach
There are two useful denominators:
- By followers tells you how your existing audience responds. Good for tracking loyalty over time.
- By reach tells you how compelling the post was to everyone who saw it, followers or not. With Reels pushing content to non-followers, this is often the truer measure of whether the content worked.
Use the same method every time so your numbers are comparable month to month.
What is a good engagement rate in 2026?
- Above 6% excellent
- 3 to 6% strong
- 1 to 3% average
- Below 1% low, time to rethink content or audience quality
Compare within your size band, small and niche accounts routinely beat large brand accounts, because their audience is tighter and more relevant.

Engagement follows relevance, not frequency. Post fewer, better pieces aimed at a specific audience; lead with a strong hook; ask a real question in the caption; and prioritise saves and shares (the signals Instagram values most) over likes. And measure what a post earns, not just what it cost. FAQs
How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?
The most common formula is (total engagements divided by followers) multiplied by 100, where engagements are likes plus comments plus saves plus shares. For a per-post rate, use the interactions on that post. To measure how content actually performs, divide by reach instead of followers.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram in 2026?
As a rough guide by followers: above 6 percent is excellent, 3 to 6 percent is strong, 1 to 3 percent is average, and below 1 percent is low. Smaller and niche accounts usually score higher than large ones, so compare within your size band.
Should I calculate engagement by followers or by reach?
Both are useful. Engagement by followers shows how your existing audience responds. Engagement by reach shows how compelling a post was to everyone who saw it, which is a better signal for whether the content itself worked, especially with Reels reaching non-followers.
Why does my small account have a higher engagement rate than big brands?
Smaller audiences are usually more relevant and more loyal, and Instagram tends to show your posts to a higher share of them. As accounts grow, reach spreads across a broader, less-engaged audience, so the percentage naturally falls. This is normal.
