Few things frustrate a local business owner more than a customer saying "I couldn't find you on Google Maps." You know the shop exists, you can see it in your own account, yet it will not show for the people you actually want to reach. The good news: this is almost always one of nine fixable problems, not a mystery.
Here is the full checklist, in the order worth working through, tuned for Indian businesses where duplicate listings and unverified profiles are especially common.
1. Your profile is not verified
An unverified Business Profile will not appear on Maps at all. Open your Google Business Profile, and if you see a "Verify now" prompt, complete it (video, postcard, phone, or email depending on what Google offers). Until that tick is done, nothing else matters.
2. The profile is suspended
Suspensions are the number one hidden cause. Google suspends profiles that break the guidelines, most often a keyword-stuffed business name ("Sharma Dental Best Dentist Dwarka"), a mismatched or virtual address, or a sudden bulk edit. If your listing vanished overnight, check for a suspension notice, fix the cause, and file a reinstatement request. Do not create a fresh profile.
3. It is simply too new
A brand-new profile can take a few days to appear and up to two to three weeks before it ranks for anything beyond your exact name. New listings carry little trust. Complete every field and collect a handful of real reviews to speed this up.
4. You are outside the searcher's proximity
Maps results are heavily distance-based. You will rank near your address but fade a few kilometres away, that is normal and not a bug. Test by searching from close to your location, or use an incognito window, rather than judging from across the city.
5. Wrong or missing primary category
Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals. "Restaurant" and "North Indian Restaurant" compete for different searches. Pick the most specific accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary ones.
6. A duplicate listing is splitting your signals
Very common in India: an old auto-generated pin plus the one you created. Duplicates confuse Google and can bury the real profile. Search your name and address on Maps, and if you find a duplicate, report it or request a merge.
7. Thin or inconsistent NAP across the web
If your Name, Address and Phone number appear differently on Justdial, Sulekha, your website, and Facebook, Google trusts the entity less. Make the NAP identical everywhere, character for character.

Profiles with steady reviews and real photos rank better and get displayed more often. Ask happy customers for reviews (a WhatsApp link works well), reply to every one, and add fresh photos monthly.
9. Guideline issues in the details
A PO box or virtual office address, hours left blank, or a service-area business that hid its address can all suppress visibility. Use a real address, fill in accurate hours, and only hide the address if you genuinely visit customers.
The quickest path back
Work top to bottom: confirm verification, rule out a suspension, then tighten category, duplicates, NAP, reviews and photos. Most "my business disappeared" cases are a suspension or a duplicate, so start there. FAQs
Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?
The most common reasons are: the profile is unverified or suspended, it is too new (Google can take days to weeks to display a new listing), the business is outside the searcher's proximity, the primary category is wrong, or a duplicate listing is competing with it. Verification and suspension are the two biggest causes.
How long does it take for a new Google Business Profile to show on Maps?
After verification it usually appears within a few days, but it can take up to two to three weeks to rank for anything beyond your exact business name. New profiles have little trust, so they surface slowly, prioritise completing every field and gathering a few genuine reviews.
Why does my business show when I search the name but not for category searches?
Ranking for your own name is easy; ranking for 'salon near me' or 'hotel in [city]' is competitive and proximity-based. If you only appear for your name, your profile is live but not yet trusted or relevant enough, work on categories, reviews, photos, and a consistent NAP across the web.
Can I fix a suspended Google Business Profile?
Yes. Fix whatever violated the guidelines (usually keyword-stuffed name, wrong address, or a virtual office), then submit a reinstatement request through Google Business Profile support. Do not create a new profile, that usually makes things worse.
